In the spring of 1521, the deepening theological fissures within Western Christendom culminated in the Diet of Worms, an imperial assembly convened by the newly elected Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. While the assembly addressed various administrative matters, its historical significance rested entirely on the interrogation of the Augustinian friar, Martin Luther. Having already challenged the sale of indulgences and burned the papal bull Exsurge Domine, Luther arrived under an imperial safe-conduct, though he faced the palpable threat of execution for heresy.
The imperial strategy sought to enforce ecclesiastical unity through the immediate and total retraction of Luther’s critiques. Johann Eck, acting on behalf of the Archbishop of Trier, presented Luther with a collection of his writings and demanded a categorical rejection of their contents. Luther’s response evinced a calculated theological stance rather than mere emotional defiance. By requesting time for reflection and subsequently declaring his conscience captive to the “Word of God,” he effectively shifted the burden of proof from papal authority to scriptural evidence. This maneuver denied church councils their claim to infallibility, fundamentally altering the parameters of religious authority.
Following Luther’s refusal to recant, the Emperor issued the Edict of Worms, declaring the friar an outlaw and forbidding the dissemination of his works. However, the political maneuvering of the German nobility proved superior to imperial decree. Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, orchestrated a staged kidnapping, spiriting Luther away to the Wartburg Castle. In this secluded strategic withdrawal, Luther translated the New Testament into the German vernacular. This act transformed a specific theological dispute into a broad cultural revolution, ensuring that the Reformation entrenched itself despite the legal prohibitions enacted at Worms.
