Initiated by Abd al-Rahman I in 785 AD, the project served as a visual assertion of Umayyad legitimacy, deliberately rivalling the Abbasid structures of the East. Rather than strictly adhering to existing templates, the architects employed a pragmatic yet revolutionary strategy to accommodate the limitations of available materials and the specific demands of the site.
The vast hypostyle hall presented a significant engineering challenge. The scavenged Roman and Visigothic columns, though readily available, lacked the stature necessary to support a towering roof or allow for sufficient illumination. To resolve this, the builders devised an ingenious double-tiered system. Lower horseshoe arches provided lateral stability, bracing the structure, while semi-circular upper arches supported the ceiling’s weight. This structural optimization allowed for a vast, open prayer space that appeared boundless, effectively solving the load-bearing deficits of the reused pillars.
The distinctive polychrome effect was not merely decorative but rooted in structural necessity. The alternating red brick and white stone voussoirs—the wedge-shaped elements forming the arch—distributed weight effectively while offering seismic resilience. This technique, echoing the visual language of the Dome of the Rock, established a unique Andalusian identity.
Later expansions, particularly under Al-Hakam II, introduced intricate polylobed arches and intertwined ribbing in the Maqsura, demonstrating a sophisticated evolution in geometric complexity. These modifications transformed the mosque from a simple place of worship into a monument of mathematical precision and political power, setting a standard that defined Moorish architecture for centuries.
